CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the second class and second supervisory level in the Sterile Supply Management series. Positions in this class are responsible for supervising a multi-shift sterile supply operation. This class is distinguished from the Sterile Supply Supervisor class by its responsibility to supervise multiple shifts of activities. It is distinguished from the Sterile Supply Manager class by the latter's responsibility to manage all activities within the Sterile Supply Department.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of considerate difficulty related to the supervision and evaluation of staff assigned to all shifts of a sterile supply unit. Interviews, hires and trains new staff in department procedures and operations; inspects the work of shift supervisors; ensures the sterility of supplies by monitoring the testing of the sterilization process; develops, revises, and interprets department policies and procedures to comply with accreditation standards; assists in the development of the Quality Assurance System; and ensures that the work environment is safe. Coordinates housekeeping activities, physical plan maintenance and equipment repairs.

Supervision Given: Provides directions to Sterile Supply Supervisors with single shift responsibility.

Supervision Received: Receives general direction from a Sterile Supply Manager.

Scope: Work activities affect the accuracy and reliability of supply processes and services provided by the activities of several assigned shifts.

Impact of Actions: If quality assurance measures are not monitored, if personnel are not supervised, or if policies and procedures are not followed, sterile supply service will not be adequately provided, and this will result in costs in terms of accreditation; time, money, and personnel resources; and in the well-being of patients.

Personal Contacts: Frequent internal contacts with medical staff and external contacts with suppliers to resolve unusual problems related to supplies, equipment and personnel.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Considerable knowledge of sterilization techniques; of inventory control methods and procedures; and of supervisory practices and principles.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to supervise a multi-shift operation; to speak and write effectively; to interpret accreditation standards; and to write policies and procedures.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: None.

Education or Training: High school graduation or equivalent with additional course work or training in sterile supply operations.

Level and Type of Experience: Progressively responsible experience in positions related to sterile supply.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.

 

CLASS HISTORY

This class replaces the Sterile Supply Supervisor class. It was developed in April 1989 as a result of the Classification Review/Specification Update Program.
