CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the first class and first supervisory level in the Sterile Supply Management series. Positions in this class supervise Sterile Supply Workers, Senior Workers and Lead Workers in the cleaning, stocking and delivery of sterile supplies and have responsibility for all activities on an assigned shift. This class is distinguished from the Sterile Supply Lead Worker class by its responsibility for supervising a shift. This class is further distinguished from the Sterile Supply Supervisor Senior class by the latter's responsibility to supervise a multi-shift operation.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs supervisory duties of moderate difficulty. Responsible for overall shift operation which involves scheduling of personnel; assigning tasks and evaluating work; ensuring that all chemical, biological and mechanical monitoring systems are correctly interpreted and maintained; ensuring that quality control inspections are conducted according to schedule; taking corrective action when there are discrepancies in the sterilization or inventory processes; and maintaining recordkeeping systems and documentation of work activities. Resolves problems related to sterilization or the availability of supplies or equipment.

Supervision Given: Provides general supervision to Sterile Supply Workers, Lead Workers, and Senior Workers.

Supervision Received: Receives directions from a Sterile Supply Supervisor Senior.

Scope: Work affects the accuracy and reliability of sterile supply processes and services provided by the activities of an assigned shift.

Impact of Actions: Inadequate quality assurance or mechanical maintenance systems checks, inadequate supply requisitions, or failure to supply supervision to staff could result in the failure to provide medical units with appropriate supplies which could negatively affect patient care. Effective job performance results in the efficient use of time and personnel resources, and adequate provision of supplies.

Personal Contacts: Frequent internal contacts with hospital and medical staff to resolve work related concerns with personnel, equipment or supplies.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Working knowledge of supervisory practices; of aseptic techniques; of supply management; and of agency procedures related to supervising a sterile supply unit.

Skills: Working skill in the use of all types of sterile cleaning equipment.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to supervise others; to speak and write effectively; and to demonstrate sterile cleaning techniques.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: None.

Education or Training: High school or graduation equivalent.

Level and Type of Experience: Experience in sterile supply or a related field.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.

 

CLASS HISTORY

This class was established in April 1989 as a result of the Classification Review/Specification Update Program. It replaces the Central Sterile Supply Supervisor class.
