CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the third class in the Sterile Supply series. Positions in this class are responsible for providing work direction to Sterile Supply Workers and Senior Workers in a unit of a hospital. This class is distinguished from the Sterile Supply Worker Senior class by its repsonsibility for providing daily work direction to others and by the assignment of routine administrative duties. It is distinguished form the Sterile Supply Supervisor class by the latter's supervisory responsibility.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of considerable difficulty. Positions provide work direction to Sterile Supply Workers and Seniors in order to ensure that necessary instruments and supplies are washed, wrapped, stocked, and delivered. Establishes standard levels of stock and inventories supplies; orients new employees; and orders supplies for unit as needed. May arrange schedules for staff. Interprets results of chemical and mechanical tests performed on cleaning systems and records required notes.

Supervision Given: Supervision is typically not a factor; however, positions provide daily work direction to Sterile Supply Workers and Senior Workers to ensure that assignments are completed correctly and efficiently.

Supervision Received: Receives general supervision from a Sterile Supply Supervisor or nurse.

Scope: Work affects the efficiency and accuracy of supply services to an assigned unit or units.

Impact of Actions: Improper administration of quality assurance checks on equipment and supplies, and miscalculations of stock levels could result in inadequate medical supplies for the assigned unit. Effective job performance results in the efficient use of resources and adequate provision of supplies which positively impacts patient care.

Personal Contacts: Frequent internal contacts with staff in order to resolve work related problems with stock, equipment or supplies.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Considerable knowledge of aseptic techniques, sterile supply needs, equipment, performance requirements, and related agency and department administrative procedures. Some knowledge of supervisory techniques.

Skills: Considerable skill in the use and calibration of sterile cleaning equipment.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to provide work direction to others; to read and write; to prepare written work reports; and to maintain and track inventory.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: None.

Education and Training: Some secondary education sufficient to read and write supply orders and to perform mathematical calculations for stocking and inventory purposes.

Level and Type of Experience: Experience sterilizing hospital equipment; and monitoring stock, equipment and supplies.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.

 

CLASS HISTORY

This class was established in April, 1989 as a result of the Classification Review/Specification Update Program. It replaces the Central Sterile Supply Aide C class.
