CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the second class in the Sterile Supply series. Positions in this class are responsible for ensuring that reusable medical/surgical supplies are cleaned, disinfected, packaged, and sterilized using proper aseptic techniques; and ensuring quality control of instrument trays or packs. This class is distinguished from the Sterile Supply Worker class by the assignment of quality control duties. It is distinguished from the Sterile Supply Lead Worker class by the latter's responsibility for providing work direction to others.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of moderate difficulty which involves using a variety of sterile cleaning equipment to sterilize and disinfect surgical/medical supplies; preparing a variety of surgical trays; ensuring quality control of cleaning procedures through chemical testing of cleaning systems; calibrating equipment; providing guidance to Sterile Supply Workers; maintaining routine work records; and signing logs certifying the rotation of stock and content of instrument trays.

Supervision Given: Supervision is typically not a factor.

Supervision Received: Receives general supervision from a nurse, or Sterile Supply Supervisor.

Scope: Work affects the supply of medical/surgical equipment and supplies of a single unit of the hospital such as surgery, labor and delivery, or the operating room.

Impact of Actions: Inconvenience and costs in terms of time, money, and patient well-being occur if instruments are not properly cleaned and sterilized, or if machines are not checked for proper operating conditions. Effective job performance ensures the provision of adequate supplies to the assigned unit.

Personal Contacts: Frequent internal contacts with hospital staff regarding the pick up and delivery of sterile supplies.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Working knowledge of aseptic techniques used to sterilize surgical and medical supplies; of agency and department procedures and requirements related to sterile supplies; and of cleaning equipment and its routine maintenance and calibration needs.

Skills: Working skill in the operation and general maintenance of autoclaves and other sterile cleaning equipment.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to read and write; to provide guidance to Sterile Supply Workers; and to prepare routine daily written work reports.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: None.

Education or Training: Grammar school or training sufficient to read instruction and write work reports.

Level of Experience or Training: Experience related to sterilizing medical supplies and/or providing supplies to a work unit.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.

 

CLASS HISTORY

This class was established in April, 1989 as a result of the Classification Review/Specification Update Program. It replaces Central Sterile Supply Aide B class.
