CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the first class in the Sterile Supply series. Positions in this class are responsible for performing routine work related to the preparation of sterile supplies for surgical and medical use. This class is distinguished from the Sterile Supply Worker Senior class by its focus on routine stocking and delivery of supplies.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of routine difficulty. Autoclaves and dispenses sterile supplies; stocks supply shelves and surgical carts; labels, loads and delivers supplies and linens to units; and picks up used items. Sets up surgical trays; and cleans autoclave machines and surgical unit/rooms.

Supervision Given: Supervision is typically not a factor.

Supervision Received: Receives immediate supervision from a Sterile Supply Supervisor or nurse.

Scope: Work affects the services of supplying sterile supplies to a single unit of a hospital such as surgery, labor and delivery, stockroom, or linen room.

Impact of Actions: Inconvenience and costs in time and money could occur if instruments and supplies are not wrapped properly. Failure to maintain stock levels could interrupt flow of work within a unit. Effective job performance facilitates efficient provision of sterile supplies to the assigned hospital unit.

Personal Contacts: Frequent internal contacts with hospital staff for routine work related matters.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Some knowledge of aseptic techniques used to sterilize surgical and medical supplies; of hospital procedures related to the stocking, delivery, and pick up of supplies; and of general cleaning techniques.

Skills: Working skill in the operation and cleaning of autoclaves and other sterilization equipment.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to read supply orders and cleaning instructions.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: None.

Education or Training: Grammar school or training sufficient to read supply orders and cleaning instructions.

Level of Experience or Training: None required for entrance into this class.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.

 

CLASS HISTORY

This class was established in April, 1989 as a result of the Classification Review/Specification Update Program and replaces the Central Sterile Supply Aide A class.
