Distinguishing Features of the Work

Performs a variety of responsible technical duties required in surgical procedures as an assistant to operating room professional staff.

Receives supervision from professional nursing or other medical staff.

Assists in setting up operating room for type of surgery to be performed including obtaining and arranging equipment and supplies, testing equipment, sterilizing instruments and setting up surgical trays.

Functions as a scrub nurse observing aseptic techniques and operating room nursing principles. Assists with gowning and gloving surgical team members. Assists in patient positioning, draping and skin preparation.

Anticipates surgeons’ equipment needs and places equipment in their hands. Establishes and maintains sterile field by controlling contaminated equipment and supplies. Observes equipment functioning and patient reactions, and advises professional staff on progress or problems.

Assists in final clip, needle and sponge count. Removes patient to recovery room. Cleans and sterilizes operating room and equipment. Returns unused supplies. Cares for specimens.

Participates in training newer technicians, student nurses and interns in operating room procedures and aseptic techniques.

 

Qualification Guide

Knowledge of operating room practices, procedures, and aseptic techniques. Knowledge of medical/surgical terminology and human anatomy. Skill in the preparation and handling of operating room supplies and equipment. Ability to assist in a variety of surgical procedures.

Completion of an approved operation room technician training program, or a combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skill and ability.
