Distinguishing Features of the Work

Supervises the non-technical activities of all attendants in a general hospital. The main responsibility is to assure that attendants are at their assigned posts, that they are performing their work in a courteous and efficient manner, are neatly dressed, and are adequately informed as to their duties and responsibilities. On-the-job supervision is received from a supervisory nurse who issues special instructions and helps with questions and problems that cannot be handled independently.

Examples of duties characteristic of positions in this class:

  1. Makes relief assignments to wards not covered by an attendant.
  2. Receives calls from wards for assistance on a specific task, makes an assignment to and instructs an on-call attendant.
  3. Makes ward rounds to see that attendants are on their assigned wards and performing their duties in a courteous an, efficient manner.
  4. Instructs attendants on general requirements of the various assignments and demonstrates the performance of specific tasks.
  5. Makes general inspection tour of hospital to observe and make necessary corrections in conditions in the halls and wards as concerns cleanliness and orderliness.
  6. Reports to supervisor of subsidiary nursing personnel on happenings during shift and makes suggestions for general and specific improvements in attendant services.
  7. Checks operation schedules and makes rounds to see that the patients are prepared for operations.
  8. Prepares the orderly and attendant assignment roster for the nursing office.

  10. Assists in handling of emergency patients and performs the patient care duties of a Hospital Attendant as required.

 

Qualification Standards

Completion of elementary school or equivalent and four years of patient care experience, at least one year of which must have been in a supervisory capacity. Satisfactory completion of high school may be substituted for one year of required experience.

Considerable knowledge of the functions of a medical hospital; considerable knowledge of the patient care duties performed by attendants; ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of subordinates; ability to detect irregularities and to recommend improvement; good physical condition, average hearing and vision.
