Distinguishing Features of the Work

Performs supervisory attendant duties on wards or in a department of a general hospital. Serves as assistant to supervisor of all attendants and orderlies, or supervises all operating room attendants, in a hospital which has a training program for attendants and assigns responsible tasks to attendants; or makes shift assignments, keeps time for, and investigates complaints against orderlies in a hospital not having a program for training attendants to perform the more responsible patient care duties. Superiors are frequently not immediately available which necessitates making decisions and taking independent action within the scope of prescribed limitations. A position in an operating room receives technical supervision from the operating room attendants; supervision on general efficiency, promptness, and courteousness is received from a supervisory nurse. General assistant supervisor positions are supervised by the attendant supervisor who assigns and reviews the work performed.

Examples of duties characteristic of positions in this class:

I. HEAD ATTENDANT DUTIES

  1. Interviews applicants for attendant positions, and makes recommendation on employment of acceptable applicants.
  2. Explains genera] rules and policies of the hospital, and specific requirements of attendants.
  3. Demonstrates technique of giving enemas.
  4. Makes ward assignments for attendants, schedules time off, and provides for coverage necessary during unscheduled absences.
  5. Prepares time cards for attendants and keeps record of time worked.

  7. Visits the various wards to discuss complaints with the nurses who directly supervise attendants.

 

II. WARD SUPERVISORY DUTIES

  1. Receives calls from wards when the supervisor is not available, makes an assignment to and instructs an on-call attendant for the specific task.
  2. Makes ward rounds to see that attendants are on their assigned wards and performing their duties in a courteous and efficient manner; corrects discrepancies observed and discusses actions taken with supervisor.
  3. Instructs attendants on specific requirements of the various assignments as requested by the supervisor.
  4. Makes general inspection tour of hospital to observe and makes necessary corrections in the conditions of the halls and wards as concerns cleanliness and orderliness; discusses actions taken with the supervisor.
  5. Assists in handling emergency patients and performs the duties of a Hospital Attendant as required.

 

III. OPERATING ROOM SUPERVISORY DUTIES

  1. Assigns attendants to the various operating rooms and makes relief assignments as required.
  2. Orients new attendants to the department and to the sections which service the department; explains and demonstrates the procedures followed in the operating room, closely observes practical work and decides when new attendants are ready to work independently.
  3. Visit the operating rooms to observe, correct, and assist attendants in the performance of their duties.
  4. Serves as an operating room attendant in one or more rooms and performs the duties listed for a Hospital Attendant.

Qualification Standards

Completion of elementary school or equivalent and three years of patient care experience that has demonstrated supervisory ability. Supervisory completion of high school may be substituted for one year of required experience.

General knowledge of the functions of a medical hospital; considerable knowledge of the patient care duties performed by attendants; ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of subordinates; good physical condition, average hearing and vision.
