Distinguishing features of the Work

Performs a wide variety of patient-care and related clinical duties in a general hospital.

This class is distinguished from the Hospital Attendant A class by the performance of more difficult and responsible patient-care duties with limited supervision once the specific assignment has been made. Duties performed at this level range from patient transportation and cleaning duties to progressively more responsible tasks such as: changing patient dressings giving enemas, taking pulse, respiration, and thermometer readings; and assisting the physician with catheterizations. Supervision is received from a nurse, attendant supervisor or physician.

Examples of duties characteristic of positions in this class:

  1. Performs certain operating room duties such as cleaning floor, lights and sterilizer; restocking clean linen and dressings, transporting patient from ward to operating, room; lifting patient from stretcher to treatment table; placing patient in proper position and adjusting supports; and assisting doctors and nurses as required during the operation.
  2. May serve as an attendant on a psychiatric ward performing such duties as quieting disturbed patients, preventing patients from possessing objects that could be harmful to them, and, in general, assisting the physicians and nurses as directed in the normal treatment of the patient.
  3. Applies ointment and warm and cold compresses; changes dressings and prepares patients for operation by cleaning and shaving operative areas.
  4. Passes and removes bed pans and urinals, cleans and sterilizes bedpans, records output, and collects specimens as requested.

  6. Requests various kinds of equipment, supplies, and common drugs; assists in setting up equipment as ordered.
  7. Prepares patients for meals and assists in feeding them.
  8. Transfers charts, X-rays and specimens as directed.
  9. Cleans and sterilizes instruments after patient is treated and places them back in proper storage area.
  10. Measures and records fluid intake and output: gives patients bed baths; takes temperatures, weighs patients and reports readings to a nurse; assists nurses and doctors with prescribed treatment and catheterizations.
  11. Prepares bodies after death and transports them to the morgue.
  12. Gives enemas and inserts rectal tubes and suppositories.

 

Qualifications Standards

Completion of elementary school or equivalent and satisfactory completion of an approved training course for hospital attendants or one year of responsible patient care experience and a demonstrated proficiency in the performance of those attendant duties specified by the hospital.

General knowledge of hospital ward practices and methods of handling patients in a general hospital, an understanding of the attitudes and requirements of patients, ability to understand and carry out oral and written instruction, good physical condition and average hearing and vision.
