Distinguishing Features of the Work

Performs routine patient care duties in a general hospital.

Positions allocated to this class serve primarily in a training capacity performing specific assignments that involve direct patient care under close supervision only. The duties performed at this level require no previous background or formal training. Non-training positions, involving primarily patient transportation and cleaning tasks, do not generally require close supervision. Training duties, however, are the more difficult assignments that are discharged in accordance with specific instructions. Supervision and training are received from nurses and supervisory attendants who teach classes, provide on-the-job instruction, and observe the practical work.

Examples of duties characteristic of positions in this class:

I. NON-TRAINTNG DUTIES

1. Prepares rooms for patients by cleaning clinic rooms, disposing of trash and soiled linens, drawing linen and supplies and distributing to the clinics.

2. Transports patients to and from clinics and helps patients

to and from stretchers.

3. Collects specimens, charts, EKG cards, X-ray request

slips and other items.

II. TRAINING DUTIES

1. Bathes critically ill patients and shaves areas of patient in preparation for operation.

2. Takes patient's temperature and may occasionally give enemas.

3. Prepares the patient for meals and assists in feeding him.

4. Answers calls from any department and renders such assistance to doctors or nurses as requested.

 

Qualification Standards

Completion of elementary school or equivalent mental development.

Ability to understand and carry out simple oral and written assignments; ability to perform minor patient care duties under close supervision; good physical condition, average hearing and vision.
