SERIES CONCEPT

Positions in this series perform multi-tasked responsibilities including: cleaning patient rooms and equipment, disposing of trash and soiled linen according to established environmental guidelines and universal protocols; maintaining supplies by inventorying and stocking items; serving and assisting patients with meal trays, and recording caloric intake for patients on a calorie count diet. Responsibilities also include frequent contacts with patients, families, and staff in other hospital departments. Positions in this class typically do not supervise the work of others, and receive supervision from a Registered Nurse or higher level professional.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

Some knowledge of basic cleaning principles. Demonstrated ability to communicate both orally and in writing with patients and staff.

 

EDUCATION OR TRAINING

High school graduate or equivalent.

 

EXPERIENCE

Some experience in a hospital setting and in performing cleaning activities.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for this training and experience.

CLASS SERIES HISTORY

This class was developed by Virginia Commonwealth University to create a multi-skilled patient support worker. Some positions in this class were previously in Housekeeping Worker, Food Operations Assistant, and Hospital Attendant classes.
