CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the first class and supervisory level of the Volunteer Services Management series. Positions in this class are responsible for providing management, activity coordination and supervisory support to the director of an agency's institutional and community board volunteer services programs. Assists a Volunteer Services Director with implementation of all program goals and objectives. This class is distinguished from the Volunteer Services Director class by the latter's charge responsibility for the volunteer program.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of moderate difficulty which involves providing direct supervision to volunteers; independently managing and coordinating components the volunteer service program; and providing support, consultation and liaison services to outside volunteer agencies. Interviews and assists with the placement, training, orientation and evaluation of volunteers; directly supervises and organizes office support personnel; plans, coordinates, and implements special projects and programs; maintains and oversees program records and statistics; and provides input into the development of overall departmental plans, goals and objectives.

Supervision Given: Directly supervises office support personnel. Provides work direction, guidance and evaluation of performance to volunteers.

Supervision Received: Receives direction from a Volunteer Services Director in the form of program guidelines, objectives, and guidance relating to nonroutine issues.

Scope: Work affects the provision of volunteer services and programs which in turn affect patients, clients, residents, visitors, staff, and patrons at whom these programs/services are targeted.

Impact of Actions: Effective job performance results in the provision of appropriate, beneficial volunteer services/programs. Errors could result in the inefficient coordination of services or in the failure to properly train and guide volunteers.

Personal Contacts: Positions in this class have frequent internal and external contacts with volunteers, clients, other agencies, and community groups to facilitate the recruitment, placement and supervision of volunteers; promote services and programs; and coordinate activities.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Working knowledge of community, social service and human resource agencies and organizations, their purposes and programs; and basic principles as set forth by the Virginia Division of Volunteerism.

Skills: None identified for this class.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to work effectively and communicate with a variety of groups and individuals, and to organize, plan, and supervise programs and activities.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: None.

Education or Training: Graduation from an accredited college or university with course work in the social sciences or a related field.

Level or Type of Experience: Prior experience in supervising individuals and groups; and in working with volunteer and/or community service organizations.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
