Distinguishing Features of the Work

Develops and implements a varied recreational and athletic program in an adult correctional facility.

May supervise a staff of one or more recreational or other assistants. Administrative direction is received from a Corrections Treatment Program Supervisor, Assistant Warden, or Warden.

Incumbents plan, supervise and evaluate athletics and other forms of recreational activities such as dramatics and music, and games such as chess, checkers and card playing. Selects and trains inmates to act as team managers and umpires. Recruits volunteers from inmates and non-inmates to assist in developing and staging plays and musical activities when special talents are required. Orients inmates to recreational activities.

Orders and maintains equipment and supplies. Arranges for equipment repair. Distributes reading materials. Selects and orders motion pictures with approval of prison administration. Requests funds and monitors expenditures. Serves on institutional classification and adjustment committees.

 

Qualification Guide

Knowledge of a variety of athletic and recreational activities. Ability to plan, conduct and evaluate group and individual activity components and to supervise inmates involved. Ability to serve on institutional committees. Ability to hire, train and supervise subordinate staff.

Graduation from a college or university with a degree in athletics, recreation or a related field. Training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for degree requirement.
