Distinguishing Features of the Work
Supervises the recreational program in a smal1 state institution or study center or acts as assistant to a higher level recreational supervisor in a large institution.
The duties involve responsibility for planning and supervising an established and well-organized recreational program for a relatively small group of patients, students or inmates (usual1y 150 to 200) in a state institution and for maintaining recreational equipment supplies, grounds and facilities. The size of the group limits the responsibility for equipment, the variety of interests and needs encountered and the number of progress reports required. Responsibility exists for maintaining security measures to prevent escapes of patients or inmates. An assignment may include full-time assistance to a higher level supervisor in a varied program of a 1arger, more populated institution. Wide latitude is permitted in adapting the program to the individual needs of the students or patients to assist them in making a social adjustment. The program is varied to meet the physical, emotional interest and social requirements for adjustment. The work may include offering class instruction in personal hygiene, interpreting rules and regulations of a sport or game and acting as arbitrator in disputes. Supervision is received through frequent conferences with a higher level supervisor or institutional superintendent.

Qualification Standards
Completion of a standard college course with a major in physical education, recreation, or a related field. Experience as athletic or recreation supervisor may be substituted for up to two years of college work on an equivalent time basis.
Ability to plan and supervise group and individual activities of varied types; ability to work effectively with a group of socially maladjusted students or emotionally disturbed patients; ability to provide for continuous adaptation of a recreation program to meet the needs of a changing student or patient population.
