Distinguishing Features of the Work

Serves as a technician in a dental laboratory in the manufacture and repair of dental prosthetic devices.

Reports to a Dental Laboratory Supervisor.

The work involves making full and partial dentures, bridges, crowns, and other dental appliances for patients in accordance with prescriptions and impressions furnished by dentists or dental students. The incumbent may make special dental appliances such as orthodontic appliances, maxillary and mandibular splints, obdurators, metal mandibular implants, intra-oral maxillofacial restorations and removable prosthodontics. May supervise technical work being done by student doctors.

 

Qualification Guide

Knowledge of dental laboratory materials, tools, equipment, and procedures. High degree of digital skill. Ability to interpret and carry out dentists' instructions.

Completion of a two-year course in dental technology in a recognized school of dentistry or technical institute; or four years of apprenticeship training in a dental laboratory; or a sufficient and equivalent combination of training and experience.
