CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the single class in the Electroencephalograph Technician series for positions that perform electroencephalographs (EEGs) on patients to determine neurological problems. Positions in this class prepare patients for testing, administer EEG, make preliminary interpretations, and maintain equipment.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of moderate difficulty involving limited independent judgment. The work typically involves scheduling and providing patients with instructions for the EEG. Prepares patient for the test by cleaning, measuring and marking scalp, and applying electrodes. During the administration of the test, this class ensures the machine is working properly and instructs patient on various procedures. At test completion, does preliminary viewing and records any unusual circumstances. May also operate biofeedback equipment and train patients in biofeedback or relaxation techniques.

Supervision Given: Supervision is typically not a factor; however, positions may provide guidance to support staff, students or residents.

Supervision Received: Works under the general supervision of medical staff usually a neurologist or a facility director.

Scope: Positions in this class affect the accuracy and reliability of EEG test results performed on patients.

Impact of Actions: Test results has a major impact in determining neurological disorders.

Personal Contacts: Frequent internal contact with patients and other hospital personnel to provide medical information. Occasional external contact with vendors to purchase equipment and supplies.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Working knowledge of electroencephalography techniques and processes.

Skills: Working skill in the operation of EEG.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to operate and perform minor repair and maintenance of EEG equipment.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: None.

Education or Training: Graduation from high school or equivalent with additional EEG training.

Level and Type of Experience: Some experience in the operation and maintenance of EEG, biofeedback equipment or other related activities.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
