CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is a single class in the Electrocardiograph (EKG) series for positions which use EKG machines to take tracings of electronic impulses of the heart to identify possible abnormalities or to interpret cardiac function. Positions work in a hospital setting to administer EKG tests and to perform associated office services tasks.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of routine difficulty in administering EKG tests to patients as part of scheduled diagnostic testing or in response to emergency requests. Positions clean equipment, stocks necessary supplies, determine appropriate order to conduct tests, or schedule appointments for tests. Visits patients in various locations or provides tests to those who visit designated EKG testing sites. Provides brief instructions to patients, positions patients and sets up and operates EKG machine. Positions in this class review preliminary results to ensure proper functioning of equipment; make minor adjustments to equipment and repeat tests as necessary. Provides test results to physicians for professional interpretation; and performs associated office services work to ensure accurate identification of tests with patients, to maintain logs of patient tests, to edit results as instructed by physicians, and to answer telephone calls.

Supervision Given: Supervision is typically not a factor for this class.

Supervision Received: Receives general supervision from a medical professional.

Scope: Positions in this class provide routine EKG testing to patients within the hospital setting of the facility.

Impact of Actions: Proper EKG testing ensures physicians are provided with adequate data to diagnose and prescribe appropriate treatment to patients. Poor quality of work may delay physicians' work because tests must be re-administered.

Personal Contacts: Frequent internal and external contacts with patients and staff.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Some knowledge of the process of telemetry.

Skills: Working skill in keyboarding and in the operation of EKG equipment.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective patient-technician relationships; maintain written records; and to recognize arrythmia.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: None.

Education or Training: High school diploma or equivalent.

Level and Type of Experience: Prior experience in a medical setting, either performing office services work, having direct patient contact as a hospital assistant, or related activities.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
