Distinguishing Features of the Work

The work involves the administration of basic respiratory therapy treatments in accordance with the physician’s orders and departmental policy in non-acute areas of a general hospital.

Employees in this class are primarily responsible for conducting oxygen and humidity therapy, intermittent positive pressure breathing and in general treating patients with varied respiratory deficiencies in non-acute care areas. Work is performed under the close supervision of a higher level Respiratory Therapy Technician or Technician Supervisor.

Examples of duties characteristic of positions in this class:

  1. Treats patients with intermittent positive pressure breathing, blow bottles, aerosol therapy and a variety of forms of oxygen administration.
  2. Monitors ventilator patients and assures that flow sheets for these patients are current. Maintains the ventilator during use by addition water to humidifier, adjusting temperature control and emptying water from tubing.
  3. Trouble shoots problem equipment in use. Makes necessary repairs or calls for replacement equipment.
  4. Assists Respiratory Therapy Assistants in learning how to assemble and disassemble equipment and maintain it properly; ensures that Respiratory Therapy Assistants are changing equipment properly every day and checks out equipment after installation to make sure it is working properly.
  5. Assists in cardiopulmonary resuscitations.

  7. Performs other assignments in the filed as requested by the Respiratory Therapy Technician, Therapists or Physicians.

 

Qualification Standards

Graduation from a program for Respiratory Therapy Technician; or high school graduation or equivalent and two years of progressively more responsible work in the field with experience in the administration of basic respiratory therapy techniques and treatments, and other operation of respiratory therapy equipment.

Basic knowledge of the functions, capabilities and limitations of the various types of respiratory therapy equipment used in oxygen therapy; ability to perform basic respiratory therapy treatments; ability to set up an maintain equipment.
