CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the second class in the Occupational Therapist Supervision and Management series and is responsible for providing occupational therapy and activities therapy services. Positions in this class manage an occupational therapy and/or activities therapy department. This class is distinguished from the Occupational Therapy Supervisor by the added responsibilities of managing, planning, organizing, directing, controlling, and coordinating the occupational therapy and/or activities therapy department, and ensuring compliance with accreditation and certification standards governing service delivery.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of considerable difficulty in planning, organizing, and directing administrative, clinical, and operational activities of physically disabled clients in occupational therapy and/or activities services. Develops, interprets, implements, and monitors policies and procedures. Coordinates program development and modifications with other services to ensure clients receive fully integrated medical services. Coordinates scheduling of staff work assignments, in-service training and professional development. Develops and monitors department budget. Develops and implements quality assurance and program evaluation systems within department.

Supervision Given: Provides technical and administrative supervision to Occupational Therapy Supervisors, Occupational Therapists Senior, and other occupational therapy and activities therapy staff.

Supervision Received: Receives general directions from higher level administrator and independently makes all administrative and clinical decisions concerning the department.

Scope: Responsibility exists for a wide range of therapeutic services in a number of operational work units which affect the physical and social functioning of clients who receive the services.

Impact of Actions: Decisions have direct impact on health care services and may have significant effects on time, money, services or public/employee goodwill.

Personal Contacts: Frequent internal and external contact with public, clients, health professionals, agency field staff, vendors, and various other agencies regarding program services and requirement procedures.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of occupational therapy; and management principles, practices, administration and supervision.

Skills: None identified.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to organize and direct the activities of others; plan and integrate activities of several functions; develop policies and procedures; interpret agency guidelines; and to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: As specified in Section 54.1-2400 of the Virginia Code.

Education or Training: Graduation from an accredited educational program in occupational therapy.

Level and Type of Experience: Extensive experience in occupational therapy services in one or more client treatment areas, supervision, and management.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
