CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the first class in the Occupational Therapist Supervision and Management series. Positions in this class provide administrative and clinical oversight for occupational therapy services. This class is distinguished from the Occupational Therapist Senior class by its responsibility for supervision of Occupational Therapist. This class is distinguished from the Occupational Therapy Director by the latter's responsibility for all aspects of occupational services which includes planning, organizing, directing and coordinating program and treatment delivery.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of moderate difficulty in planning the delivery of occupational therapy services. Formulates and implements policies and procedures for occupational therapy programs. Assigns and reviews the work of staff. Develops occupational therapy goals and objectives. Performs the recruitment, training and evaluation functions. Coordinates occupational therapy services with other specialty service areas. Participates in interdisciplinary team processes. May serve as a working supervisor providing direct occupational therapy services to clients. May develop, plan, and supervise a clinical training program for occupational therapy students and observe and evaluate student progress. Completes reports and other necessary documentation.

Supervision Given: Supervises Occupational Therapists Senior, Occupational Therapists and Occupational Therapist Assistants in the development of client treatment plans and delivery of services. May supervise positions in other classes involved in activity therapy services.

Supervision Received: Receives direction from an Occupational Therapy Director or higher level administrator.

Scope: Work affects the planning and delivery of services to clients to develop, restore, or maintain activities of daily living. Program planning and training of staff enhances the quality of services.

Impact of Actions: Responsibilities for the coordination and management of a wide range of services have direct impact on the occupational therapy program and services and may have significant impact in terms of money, time, and public goodwill.

Personal Contacts: Frequent internal and external contacts with staff, health and hospital professionals, clients, and families concerning program and services.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Working knowledge of the principles and practices of occupational therapy; and a working knowledge of administrative and supervisorly prinicples and practices.

Skills: None identified.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to supervise occupational therapy program and staff; apply principles and practices of occupational therapy; evaluate client treatment plans; fabricate and use adaptive equipment; and communicate effectively orally and in writing.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: As specified in Section 54.1-2400 of the Virginia Code.

Education or Training: Graduation from an accredited education program in occupational therapy.

Level and Type of Experience: Progressive experience in occupational therapy services in one or more client treatment areas.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
