RADIOLOGIC TECHNOLOGIST SENIOR 43143
8/16/90 C
CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION
This is the third level in the Radiologic Technologist series. Positions in this class perform special radiological procedures to include taking and developing diagnostic radiographs, administering radiation therapy and performing administrative duties within a hospital setting. This class is distinguished from the Radiologic Technologist by its use of a variety of diagnostic and therapeutic radiological procedures including those requiring the use of contrast media, catheters or special equipment. This class is distinguished from the Radiologic Technologist Supervisor by that class' supervisory responsibilities.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK
Complexity of Work: Performs work of a considerable difficulty such as examinations involving the nervous system, circulatory system, heart or brain, administering radiation therapy, or specializing in quality control; or serves as the single radiologic technician in an agency or unit taking and developing diagnostic chest and bone radiographs, assisting a radiologist with fluoroscopy procedures, and performing related administrative work. Incumbents may attend to unusual or emergency cases and perform special radiological procedures such as:
Angiography involving the insertion of catheters into the veins or arteries of patients for the purpose of injecting contrast media; and taking radiographs during the examination.
Tomography involving the use of sophisticated radiological equipment to produce a detailed image of an organ in a particular plane or depth of tissue. C.T. scanning involves taking a series of radiographs which are reconstructed through a computer.
Radiation Therapy involving the delivery of a planned dose of radiation to the patient; recording the dose; and observing the patient during treatment noting any changes in patient condition.
Quality Control involving the monitoring of films for clarity; deciding whether the patient may be released or film must be repeated; and the monitoring of film processors and silver recovery units for proper operation.
Supervision Given: Supervision is typically not a factor.
Supervision Received: Works under the general direction of a higher level radiologic technologist, physician, or general administrator.
Scope: Duties performed facilitate accurate and conclusive evidence to findings of physicians.
Impact of Actions: Work has significant impact on physicians findings. Errors made in the injection of contrast media into the veins and arteries or in administering of the relatively large doses of radiation used in therapy could result in the illness or death of the patient.
Personal Contacts: Frequent internal and external contact with medical personnel and patients to gather, discuss, and relay information regarding patients.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge: Considerable knowledge of radiological methods and procedures including the particular special procedures assigned. Working knowledge of the anatomy; of radiological and electrical safety measures.
Skills: Working skill in the operation of radiological equipment and in film processing.
Abilities: Ability to discuss, review, and guide the work of others; to understand and follow technical instructions; to prepare and maintain accurate records; and to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment. Ability to process film and evaluate its quality; ability to to perform a variety of radiological procedures including those requiring the use of contrast medias, catheters or special equipment.
QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*
Licenses or Certification: Registration with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists may be required.
Education or Training: Graduation from an accredited program of radiologic technology.
Level and Type of Experience: Considerable experience as a Radiologic Technologist.
An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
