CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the first class in the Laboratory Technician series. Positions in this class are responsible for performing manual work in support of the operations of a teaching, research, clinical, service or regulatory laboratory. Positions follow a highly structured schedule in performing simple, repetitive tasks under the immediate supervision of higher level laboratory personnel. This class is distinguished from the Laboratory Technician class by its focus on less technical duties with more restrictive guidelines.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of routine difficulty in a laboratory setting. The work typically involves: routine washing and sterilizing glassware; setting up and distributing patient kits; receiving, distributing, and preparing packages/ samples for mail or other shipping systems; distributing mail, supplies, materials, and equipment; and cleaning and sanitizing tables, counters, and laboratory equipment. May also operate an autoclave and prepare routine media. Duties may include low level clerical responsibilities such as filing, sorting or distributing reports.

Supervision Given: Supervision is typically not a factor.

Supervision Received: Positions work under the immediate supervision of higher level laboratory personnel.

Scope: Activities facilitate the work of the laboratory.

Impact of Actions: Work has minor impact on laboratory functions. Ineffective performance results in inconvenience and lost time.

Personal Contacts: Infrequent internal contacts with unit personnel on routine matters, in order to receive or distribute samples or kits.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Some knowledge of basic procedures for cleaning glassware; of the working environment; and of basic safety procedures.

Skills: None identified for this class.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to handle delicate laboratory glassware within prescribed time limits; and to follow routine oral and written instructions.

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: None.

Education or Training: None required for entrance into this class.

Level and Type of Experience: Experience in general household cleaning.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.

 

CLASS HISTORY

This class was established in April 1989 as a result of the Classification Review/ Specification Update Program. It replaces the Laboratory Aide A and Laboratory Aide B classes.
