CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the third class and supervisory 1evel of the Medical Technologist Series. Positions in this class are responsible for a full service laboratory in a local public health district or major mental institution, a sub-unit or shift in a major teaching hospital, or for ongoing special procedures development or program development (for example, Quality Assurance) in a large procedurally diverse and complex laboratory, or for a major subspecialty laboratory in a teaching veterinary hospital. This class is distinguished from the Medical Technologist Senior by the greater scope of supervision and administrative responsibilities. This class is distinguished from the Medical Technologist Manager class by responsibility for a smaller laboratory that does require subordinate supervisors and by the absence of managerial responsibilities.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Work is of considerable difficulty requiring the coordination of activities of a full service laboratory, a sub-unit, or of a major subspecialty laboratory. The work typically involves establishing protocols to be followed by the laboratory; developing, implementing, and interpreting laboratory objectives, policies, and procedures; coordinating and monitoring laboratory proficiency testing, quality control, and safety activities; reviewing results of tests performed by subordinates and determining the need for additional testing; conducting complex tests and examinations; recommending the allocation of staff and resources; serving as an authority in one or more specialty areas; conducting research to develop or adapt new tests and procedures; prioritizing and scheduling work; preparing management reports summarizing section work activities; consulting with and providing advice to laboratory users regarding sample collection techniques, testing procedures, and the interpretation of results; training and

Inadequate supervision can result in work backlogs, reporting of inaccurate results, violation of safety procedures, and loss of laboratory credibility.
