Distinguishing Features of the Work

Supervises and administers a unit which provides therapeutic recreation and activity therapy services to all treatment areas in a state institution.

Supervision is exercised over recreation therapists, recreation therapy interns, students, volunteers and assistants. Direction is received from a clinical or administrative head of the department to which the unit is assigned.

Approves, monitors and evaluates existing and proposed programs and resources. Trains, assigns and evaluates the work of recreation therapists and assistants. Directs the supervision of recreation therapy interns and other students. Handles administrative activities relating to budgeting, cost control, charges for services, supplies and equipment, and development of community resources. Meets with clinical and administrative department heads throughout the facility to coordinate programs and resolve conflicts.

The magnitude of the program requires a preponderance of time and effort on supervisory and administrative duties.

 

Qualification Guide

Knowledge of the principles, techniques, and methods used in therapeutic recreation. Knowledge of the kinds and usage of materials and equipment used in therapeutic recreation. Knowledge of management techniques. Ability to plan and administer institution-wide therapeutic recreation services in coordination with other treatment programs.

Graduation from a college or university with major studies in therapeutic recreation or a related field and experience in the conduct of supervision and administration of therapeutic recreation; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
