Distinguishing Features of the Work

Supervises and conducts professional therapeutic recreation activity therapy in the treatment and rehabilitation programs of a unit in a state institution.

Supervision is exercised over recreation therapists, recreation therapy interns, students, volunteers and assistants. Supervision is received from a clinical or administrative head of the unit.

This is a worker-supervisor combination of duties. Approves and monitors programs for the organization. Directs, conducts and modifies individual and group activities in prescribed and non-prescribed recreation therapy intended to promote physical, mental and social well-being. Supervises recreation therapy interns and other students. Consults with treatment teams and attending physicians on patient responses and needs. May perform administrative duties related to budgets, expenditure control, equipment and supplies, and grants management.

This class also includes positions that function as consultants in therapeutic recreation to clinical staff throughout the facility.

 

Qualification Guide

Knowledge of the principles, techniques and methods used in therapeutic recreation. Knowledge of the kinds and usage of materials and equipment used in therapeutic recreation. Ability to stimulate and sustain interest of patients in therapeutic activities. Ability to evaluate and report on patient progress. Ability to supervise the work of others.

Graduation from a college or university with major studies in therapeutic recreation or related subjects and experience in the conduct of therapeutic recreation and activity therapy programs; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
