Distinguishing Features of the Work

Conducts professional therapeutic recreation and activity therapy in the treatment and rehabilitation programs of a state institution.

Guidance may be provided to recreation therapy interns, students, volunteers and assistants. Supervision is received from a higher level recreation therapist.

The work is performed in an environment that is purposely therapeutic. Organizes, conducts and modifies individual and group activities in prescribed (directive) and non-prescribed (non-directive) recreation therapy intended to improve patients' physical, mental, and social well-being. Evaluates patients' condition, capacities, and therapy needs, and plans activities accordingly. Counsels patient and/or family on recreation or leisure time opportunities and follow-up services. Provides leisure skills counseling and training.

Participates in treatment teams, discusses patients' response, consults with attending physicians, and schedules patient activities in coordination with other disciplines.

 

Qualification Guide

Knowledge of the principles, techniques and methods of therapeutic recreation. Knowledge of the kinds and usage of therapeutic recreation materials and equipment. Ability to stimulate and sustain interests of patients in therapeutic activities. Ability to evaluate and report on patient progress. Ability to work with and guide other employees.

Graduation from a college or university with major studies in therapeutic recreation or a related field; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
