Distinguishing Features of the Work

Directs the non-medical speech and audiology diagnostic and therapy services for clients in a State institution.

Incumbent assigns and evaluates the work of a staff of speech pathologists and audiologists. General direction is received from a physician or a non-medical administrator who is responsible for several program areas.

Work involves planning and implementing speech, language and hearing services for clients; coordinating these clinical services with other programs in the institution; developing and executing the departmental budget; supervising clinical and clerical staff; conducting or coordinating in-service training for staff; and evaluating program standards and assessing patient progress based on program and individual objectives.

Serves as department representative at interdisciplinary staff conferences to design clients’ therapy programs. May lecture on disorders of speech and hearing to counselors, nurses and other professional groups in in-service training programs.

 

Qualification Guide

Knowledge of program planning and evaluation; knowledge of the budgeting process; skill in the diagnosis, evaluation and treatment of disorders or impairments of speech, language, voice or hearing whether of organic or non-organic origin; ability to supervise and train subordinates; administrative ability.

Possession of a license to practice Speech Pathology or Audiology from the Virginia Board of Examiners for Audiology and Speech Pathology. Prior experience in the speech and hearing field.
