Distinguishing Features of the Work

Conducts and interprets speech and language examinations and performs other related clinical, teaching, and research duties.

Administers and evaluates special non-medical examinations of the receptive and expressive functioning of the various central and peripheral speech and language systems. Additional responsibilities include selecting and recommending the use of prosthetic devices to help alleviate or restore various expressive functions of the verbal communication system; operating various speech and language instrumentation; preparing evaluative reports and examinations; recommending and conducting rehabilitative procedures on patients exhibiting various communicative disorders; conducting research, carrying out supporting functions of a professional member of a communication disorders team. May supervise assistants and aides, and visit other agencies to perform similar functions, teach, and demonstrate speech pathology techniques. Duties are performed with considerable independence. General supervision, priority of service and other direction may be received from a higher level Speech Pathologist or other Administrator.

 

Qualification Guide

Current Virginia license to practice Speech Pathology from the Virginia Board of Examiners for Audiology and Speech Pathology.
