Distinguishing Features of the Work

Supervises the physical therapy treatment program in a State hospital or rehabilitation institution, or supervises the operation of a treatment unit in a large teaching hospital offering, in addition to treatment, a clinical training program for physica1 therapy students.

The duties involve planning, assigning, and reviewing the work performed by employees in the institution's physical therapy department, or in a unit which provides all types of treatment. The position is a worker-supervisor combination of duties and requires the supervisor to administer all types of physical therapy treatments and also to consult with and to review and evaluate work of the Physical Therapists supervised. Supervisors in a clinical training program give both classroom and on-the-job instructions in various phases and types of treatment. In a rehabilitation institution, supervision is assumed for a phase of the total program such as the functional treatments, prosthetic training, or dry and moist heat therapy.

Examples of duties characteristic of positions in this class:

1. Interprets prescriptions and assigns patients to individual therapists for treatment as indicated.

Administers treatment in difficult cases or to instruct students.

3. Refers patients to physician in charge for periodic checks and

when otherwise indicated.

4. Reviews individual case reports from staff members; confers

with staff members and advises an individual treatment;

prepares consolidated reports and records.

5. Accompanies physician when examinations and diagnostic tests are performed and receives orders for treatments on specific tests to be given to patients.

6 Attends and participates in staff conferences; keeps department informed of changes in hospital policies.

Qualification Standards

Graduation from an approved school of physical therapy and licensed to practice physical therapy in Virginia; two years of experience as a physica1 therapist in a recognized hospital or in public health under supervision of a qualified physician.

Thorough knowledge of skeletal and neuro-anatomy. Considerable knowledge of fundamental theories of physical therapy techniques and of their proper application, including electrotherapy, hydrotherapy, actinotherapy, massage, muscle re-education, therapeutic exercise, and all other aspects of body mechanics as a means of therapy. Ability to direct the work of professional therapists and to instruct new therapists, aides, and students in their duties; wide knowledge of the work of a physical therapy clinic and the ability to supervise the maintenance of accurate records on the work; ability to give all accepted physical therapy treatments.
