Distinguishing Features of the Work

Supervises a field staff assigned to a geographical area of the State and perform duties relating to dental health and oral hygiene services as a part of the State dental health program.

This is a combination of duties consisting of supervision of a staff of public health dentists and within an assigned geographical area of the State and the performance of dental and oral hygiene services as a part of the State dental health program. Educational and survey programs are planned in conjunction with a higher level supervisor and responsibility is assumed for implementation of the program and the assignment of subordinates to the gathering of necessary data. Close technical supervision is exercised over subordinate dentists and includes conducting field training programs. The work requires considerable Public contact with social and educational organizations in developing local programs, advising local groups on procedure, and the preparation of periodic reports on dental health activities. The normal dental services required in the geographical area are performed as a regular function of the job. Considerable latitude is permitted in working with local denta1 organizations and in supervision of subordinate personnel, but procedural changes and policy interpretations are reviewed and approved by the Dental Health Director or his assistant.

Examples of duties characteristic of positions in this class:

1. Supervises a group of field personnel performing dental services

within an assigned area of the State; assigns personnel to duties

which include research surveys and educational progress on dental

health and oral hygiene, reviews reports of subordinates and trains

new personnel.

In conjunction with the Dental Health Director or his assistant,

plans and implements educational programs in local jurisdictions;

surveys needs of communities and promotes local authorities’

compliance with dental and oral health needs.

Performs public relations duties within geographlce1 area through

lectures, advisory services to local health officers, and

participation ~n local dental health society activities.

Prepares periodic reports of activities; reviews and approves

subordinate dentists’ reports.

Performs duties of Public Health Dentist A as a regular function

of the work.

 

Qualification Standards

Graduation from an accredited school of dentistry and two years of experience as a Public Health Dentist A, or eighteen months as a Public Health Dentist Trainee and one year of experience as a Public Health Dentist A, licensed to practice dentistry in the State. A master's degree in public health may be substituted for all but one year of the required experience.

Thorough knowledge of modern dental health and oral hygiene practices; thorough knowledge of preventive and corrective dentistry methods; general knowledge of public health dentistry programs and the rules and regulations of the Department of Health; ability to supervise and train a group of staff dentists; ability to meet and consult with all people in local communities.
