Distinguishing Features of the Work

Provides professional medical services to the physically handicapped in a comprehensive rehabilitation center.

Supervises an assigned nurse practitioner. Receives technical supervision from the Rehabilitation Center Medical Services Director.

Examines, treats, and prescribes for students reporting on sick call. Hospitalizes those in need of close 1medical supervision. Performs minor surgery such as excision of boils, warts, and minor growths. Sutures cuts and lacerations.

Periodically examines the chronically ill such as cardiac, arrested tubercular, cerebral palsy, epileptic, and arthritic cases to determine health status. Revises medication dosages as required. Prescribes additional treatment or refers patients to medical specialists if necessary. Makes rounds on an assigned medical unit as appropriate.

Consults with Rehabilitation Center Medical Services Director on care of patients requiring special treatment because of physical handicap or on the transfer of students to other institutions. Serves on medical staff committees.

 

Qualification Guide

Knowledge of the principles and practices of medicine in the care and treatment of the physically ill. Knowledge of the emotional problems of the disabled. Skill in diagnosing and treating illnesses and injuries. Ability to prepare medical summaries, evaluations, and recommendations. Ability to supervise nursing personnel.

Graduation from an accredited medical school, completion of an approved two or three year residency in a recognized medical specialty leading to Board eligibility, and a valid license to practice medicine in Virginia.
