Distinguishing Features of the Work

Directs the overall functions of a mental hospital in the dual capacity of facility director and chief medical officer.

Directs and supervises medical and non medical subordinates.

Reports to the Commissioner of Mental Health/Mental Retardation.

Duties and responsibilities encompass developing policies, rules, and regulations; ensuring efficient and effective use of resources; supervising the activities of the medical staff to ensure that quality care is being provided, and accepted procedures and protocols are being observed.

Supervises the training of psychiatric resident physicians, medical students, nurses and mental health care providers.

Makes hospital rounds to observe/advise on administrative matters and patient care. Confers with relatives and friends on patients' condition, progress, complaints or problems.

Is responsible for ensuring the timeliness and adequacy of budgetary and fiscal reports and transactions, the maintenance of buildings and grounds, recommending and approving new construction plans, and similar administrative matters.

 

Qualification Guide

Knowledge of the principles and practices of general medicine, and of the medical and surgical aspects involved in the diagnosis and treatment of mental disease. Demonstrated ability in mental hospital administration, and in supervising a medical and administrative staff.

Graduation from medical college supplemented by the training and experience required to be eligible for examination in psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Administrative/Managerial experience including experience in psychiatric practice. Licensed to practice medicine in Virginia.
