Distinguishing Features of the Work

Performs highly responsible professional work requiring the services of a qualified medical specialist in the care and treatment and rehabilitation of physically and

mentally ill patients or serves as a consultant in a specialized medical program or

research project May serve as a clinician in a hospital, training center, or clinic concerned with

a particular specialty or supervise designated medical functions of a particular medical or other unit within a State mental hospital, training center, or clinic. Such supervision

includes outlining, appraising, and providing means for improving the activities of

psychiatrists, surgeons, internists, physicians, psychologists, and other professional and

paraprofessional staff members involved in client services. Independently carries out the medical

services program subject to general policies established by the institutional director,

Deals with the most difficult and complicated medical problems and questions and policy

interpretation as they refer to medical matters.

Examples of duties characteristic of positions in this class:

Participates in setting standards, policies, and development

of psychiatric and medical treatment programs and

therapeutic modes or serves as consultant to make critical

evaluations of data developed by physicians, nurses,

psychologists, and other related professional and paraprofessional

personnel.

Participates in appropriate educational programs and

promotional activities and examines and diagnoses patients

and prescribes treatment and prepares examination reports

and diagnoses.

Participates in staff conferences and plans and reviews, and

plans for medical and psychiatric care and its improvement.

Assists in the supervision of the clinical and medical

operations of the hospital, training school, or clinic

program ascertaining that appropriate records are prepared

or maintained.

Offers advice and assistance in developing grant applications and confers with hospital directors and administrators and medical and nursing staff on the improvement of facilities services and techniques and

programs concerning client treatment.

Supervises other physicians and other lower level related

medical professional personnel and paraprofessional

personnel.

Makes necessary arrangements for special treatments and

examinations by outside medical specialists, discuss medical

problems with other departmental personnel having interest

in medical programs.

Reviews and evaluates and discusses deficiencies of lower

leve1 physicians, laboratory technicians, social workers,

psychologists, occupational therapists, physical therapists,

and other paraprofessionals assigned.

9. Discusses with relatives matters concerning clients.

Plans and coordinates special training courses for college

and nursing students and assists various groups on tours

through the facility to enhance public relations.

Develops medical and educational programs for staff and

performs miscellaneous investigation and fact-finding

assignments for the institutional director.

 

Qualification Standards

Graduation from a recognized medical college and completion of an approved two or three year residency in an accepted medical specialty and a license to practice medicine in Virginia or eligibility therefore. Three years of experience in a specific specialty area may be substituted for each year of the required residency training in a given specialty.

Considerable knowledge of recent developments and standard techniques in the diagnostic treatment of mental diseases and disorders. Considerable knowledge of the thorough principles and practices of general medicine. Considerable knowledge of the medical functions of a mental hospital, training center, or clinic and ability to diagnose and prescribe for most complications affecting mental patients and other clients or State mental hospitals, training centers and clinics.
