Distinguishing Features of the Work

Performs general medical services to psychiatric patients as a participant in an approved psychiatric residency training program in a State mental hospital, clinic or institution. An incumbent receives formal training in medical and psychiatric treatment practices, including both study-discussion and service-to-patient elements. Close guidance is received from a higher level mental health physician who reviews the work through observation, consultations, staff meetings, and reports.

Examples of duties characteristic of positions in this class:

1. Performs physical examinations and services; obtains medical histories; makes ward rounds; diagnoses causes of illness and injury; prescribes and administers treatments to patients.

2. Rotates through the various services of the facility to which assigned; observes and assists physicians in performing mental examinations; may coordinate the nursing and supporting services in the assigned area.

3. Prepares periodic progress reports on patients and prepares case histories when patients are transferred or released.

4. Attends staff conferences for discussion of diagnoses and treatments.

Participates in a formal training program on an individual or group basis for the purpose of learning the latest theories and techniques in the field of psychiatry; attends lectures and seminars on various topics related to the psychological and psychiatric treatment of patients.

Qualification Standards

For Licensed Resident:

Graduation from a recognized medical college and a license to practice medicine in the State or eligibility therefore. Completion of a one-year rotating internship in an approved hospital may be substituted for the first year of a four-year residency program and will allow employment as a second year resident.

For Unlicensed Resident:

Graduation from a recognized medical college. Completion of a one-year rotating internship in an approved hospital may be substituted for the first year of a four-year residency program and will allow employment as a second year resident.

General knowledge of the causes, methods of diagnosis, and treatment of mental diseases; considerable knowledge of the theory, principles and modern practices of general medicine; ability to diagnose and prescribe for physical illnesses.
