CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This class is the first supervisory level in the Public Health Physician series. Positions in this class function within the Community Health Operations area to provide direct patient care and formal supervision to Public Health Physicians. Responsibilities include developing, implementing, and evaluating medical service delivery in a health district. This class is distinguished from the Public health Physician Specialist by its formal supervision of Public Health Physicians. This class is distinguished from the Public Health District Director by the latter's responsibility for managing all medical and administrative operations in a health district.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: The supervisory and/or administrative tasks are of moderate complexity and include: patient assessment and diagnosis, examination and treatment, supervision of Public Health Physicians, development of procedures and policies for implementation of services within its assigned area, monitoring service delivery and recommending improvements to the Public Health District Director for adoption. This class provides consultation to physicians, other professionals, environmental and nursing staff, and the community.

Supervision Given: This class provides direct supervision to physicians. May supervise social workers, nurse practitioners and/or other professional or support staff.

Supervision Received: Receives direction from a Public Health District Director.

Scope: Positions in this class are located in health districts where they provide medical supervision to other physicians, and may provide direct care to patients.

Impact of Actions: Actions and decisions could result in inconvenience or delay to district operations and may affect the quality of care provided to the patients.

Personal Contacts: Frequent internal and external contact with health professionals (physicians, nurses, allied health professionals), patients, public and private agencies, and the public to routinely exchange information.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Working knowledge of medical practices including evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of patients. Working knowledge of administrative and supervisory principles.

Skills: Working skill in the use of all medical instruments and equipment necessary to provide quality care. Skill in direct delivery of patient care.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to examine, diagnose, and effectively treat patients and to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

License or Certification: Licensed or eligible to be licensed to practice medicine in Virginia.

Education or Training: Graduation from an accredited medical school. Satisfactory completion of approved postgraduate training according to the Code of Virginia, Section 54-274.

Level and Type of Experience: Experience in a leadership or supervisory capacity preferred.
