CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the first class in the Registered Nurse series for positions in state hospitals and institutions. Positions in this class provide direct professional nursing services. This class is distinguished from the Registered Nurse Senior by the latter's charge responsibility for a basic nursing skills training program.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of moderate difficulty in the delivery of nursing care. Assists physicians or nurse practitioners with patient examinations; transcribes and carries out physician orders; develops, implements and documents nursing care plans; administers medications and treatments; and educates patients about disease and treatment processes. The work may include responsibility for obtaining and organizing supplies and equipment, making safety checks of equipment and the patient environment, giving work assignments to staff aides, participating in treatment planning sessions with an interdisciplinary team, and providing emergency care and transport.

Supervision Given: May assign tasks to staff aides and monitor the work.

Supervision Received: General clinical supervision is received from a nursing or medical professional. Administrative supervision is received from a nursing, medical, or other program administrator.

Scope: Works with other health care providers to give direct services to patients.

Impact of Actions: Delivery of nursing care may have a moderate to serious impact upon the health, comfort, and safety of patients.

Personal Contacts: Frequent internal contacts with patients, physicians, and other health care workers in order to implement orders and carry out nursing care plans. May have contact with support staff to arrange for supplies or equipment.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Working knowledge of the principles and practices of professional nursing.

Skills: Working skill in administering medications and treatments.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to assist in physical examinations, carry out physician orders, develop nursing care plans; document services, and communicate effectively with patients and staff.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

License or Certification: Licensed or eligible for licensure as a Registered Nurse by the Virginia Board of Nursing.

Education or Training: Graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing.
