Distinguishing Features of the Work

Performs prescribed prophylactic treatment and/or promotes oral health education in State institutions or local health departments and communities.

Emphasis may be on clinical treatment, oral health education, or a combination of the two depending on position requirements. Duties encompass teeth and mouth inspection, patient records, taking X-rays, teeth cleaning and polishing, patient dental care instruction, assisting in the establishment and operation of local health or school clinics, dissemination of educational materials, making presentations to professional and lay groups.

Reports to a medical or other administrative position.

 

Qualification Guide

Possession of a certificate from an approved school of dental hygiene and licensure as a dental hygienist in Virginia. A temporary permit from the Virginia Board of Dentistry may be acceptable in some positions.

Ability to gain the confidence and cooperation of patients. Ability to interface with professional and lay groups, public speaking ability, and willingness to travel are required in some positions.
