Distinguishing Features of the Work

Manages an audiology program, supervising the activities of audiologists engaged in conducting and interpreting audiological examinations.

Provides direct supervision to a staff of Audiologists. Supervision is received from an Audiology and Speech Pathology Program Director or other agency department director.

Establishes goals and objectives, policies, standards and plans of service for the audiology program. Operates audiological instrumentation and prepares reports of results. Recommends and/or conducts rehabilitative procedures such as speech reading, hearing therapy, auditory training, and hearing aid evaluations and training. Recommends, selects, and fits specific hearing aids in accordance with prescribed professional techniques. Counsels patients and families with regard to psycho-social problems as they relate to persons with hearing impairment. Supervises audiologists involved in clinical duties and conducts in-service training and professional orientation. Plans and directs new programs for audiological activities and services.

Works with patients, family members, and other hospital or facility support staff.

 

Qualification Guide

Knowledge of the principles and practices of clinical audiology. Knowledge of the procedures of audio-metric examinations. Knowledge of the use of hearing aids. Ability to work with patients. Ability to supervise subordinate personnel. Ability to interpret results of audio-metric examinations.

Graduation from a college or university with major course work in Audiology or related curriculum. Experience as a audiologist, preferably in a supervisory capacity. A combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for the degree requirement.

Current Virginia license to practice Audiology from the Virginia Board of Examiners for Audiology and Speech Pathology.
