CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is a single class series responsible for a pest control program for an institution of higher education, a hospital, or a local health department. The work involves performing routine pest control preventive measures; conducting inspections; investigating complaints from citizens or agency staff; mixing and maintaining records of chemicals; and using various methods to exterminate rodents, mosquitoes, termites, bats, roaches and other pests.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of moderate difficulty. Positions conduct inspections and exterminate pests in order to insure safe and sanitary conditions for citizens, staff, employees, students or patients. Positions in this class bait and spray city sewerage systems; bait and lay rat traps; inspect building foundations and interior woodwork to determine the nature and extent of pest infestation; investigate citizen complaints of rodent, insect, and other pest harborages; apply chemicals for insect and bird control; and trap and eradicate mosquitoes. The work requires the ordering, storing, mixing and application of restricted chemicals and poisons such as insecticides, herbicides, rodenticides and larvicides for extermination activities. Additional duties include maintaining records of activities and chemicals used and testing and recommending usage of new products. Some positions may perform routine maintenance of their vehicle or equipment used.

Supervision Given: Supervision typically is not a factor.

Supervision Received: Receives general supervision from a Buildings and Grounds Supervisor, Housekeeping Supervisor, or higher level classes in the Sanitarian series.

Scope: Work affects the health and safety of citizens within a city health district; patients and staff within a hospital; or students, faculty and staff within a college or university.

Impact of Actions: Activities directly impact the sanitary condition of the area assigned. If left untreated, pest infestations could cause the spread of disease or damage to structures.

Personal Contacts: Frequent internal contact with employees, staff and students to schedule service calls and to determine their sensitivity to chemicals. Frequent external contacts with citizens to provide information on pest control; with public utility departments to advise of insect and rodent problems; with Department of Agriculture to maintain knowledge of pest control regulations; and with chemical supplies to place orders.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Working knowledge of chemicals and the application methods used in the pest control industry; pest habitats; and of diverse pests and the appropriate treatment for control.

Skills: Working skill in the use of chemical applicators and other pest control equipment.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to communicate orally and in writing; to apply restricted chemicals in accordance with established regulations; and to read, understand and follow chemical label instructions.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: Licensed by the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services as a Commercial Applicator.

Education or Training: Graduation from high school or equivalent with training in the application of chemicals and other extermination methods used for pest control.

Level and Type of Experience: Some experience as a pest control operator, exterminator, or closely related field.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
