CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is a single class series responsible for the daily supervision of Virginia Welcome Centers. Positions in this class supervise the operation and maintenance of an assigned Virginia Welcome Center, and provide comprehensive travel information and trip planning to the traveling public.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of moderate difficulty. Positions in this class counsel visitors on trip planning; provide routing information; and suggest attractions and destinations to increase the visitor's length of stay in Virginia. Positions also perform administrative duties including the preparation and submission of monthly reports to the Division of Tourism which contain information such as visitor counts, petty cash and travel vouchers, newsletter articles, and origins of visitors. Positions oversee the ordering, posting, and stocking of hundreds of different tourism brochures and accommodation directories; answer phones; respond to written inquiries; authorize routine maintenance of facility; purchase supplies; and monitor weather and road conditions. Supervisory duties include interviewing, hiring, training and evaluation of staff.

Supervision Given: Positions provide immediate supervision to clerical staff and part-time housekeepers.

Supervision Received: Receives general direction from an Information Director in the form of bi-monthly meetings to discuss issues, concerns, and new policies.

Scope: Work activities affect the traveling public in a region of the State, and the public image of the tourism program.

Impact of Actions: Effective job performance ensures the provision of accurate routing and trip planning information necessary for an enjoyable visit to the state. Ineffective decisions could negatively affect the overall public image and effectiveness of the tourism program.

 

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Working knowledge of the Virginia Tourism Program and of tourism attractions. Some knowledge of basic office management and accounting principles.

Skills: None identified for this class.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with the public; to supervise others; and to compile information into reports.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

License or Certification: None.

Education or Training: Graduation from high school or equivalent and training in sales.

Level and Type of Experience: Considerable experience in a position which required extensive public contact.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
