CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This class is responsible for developing and providing science and technology educational programs and events in the Science Museum for schools, teachers, the general public and special groups to enrich their understanding of science.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of considerable difficulty which includes Planning and development of science education demonstrations, workshops, field trips and special programs and events. Positions conduct an evaluation program to determine the effectiveness of museum exhibits and programs; meet visiting groups, orient them to the museum and arrange for their accompaniment by museum instructors; and train instructional aides and volunteer tour guides.

Supervision Given: Directs the work of museum) educators, evaluators, instructional aides ar,d volunteers which have a direct impact on museum operations.

Supervision Received: General direction is received from the Science Museum Presentations Director.

Scope: Positions conceptualize, implement and direct educational programs and events in the museum.

Impact of Actions: Positions in this class have a significant impact on the museum in terms of quality of science education and programs giving the visitors an opportunity to enjoy and better their understanding of science and its relationship to daily living.

Personal Contacts: Frequent contacts with museum visitors, volunteers, exhibits staff, area teachers and staff of other museums.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES

Knowledge: Considerable knowledge of planning and implementing science educational pro-trams and events and basic statistical theory and methodology.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to interact with the general public and staff members; create, organize and present educational programs and events; and supervise staff and volunteers.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: None.

Education or Training: Graduation from a college or university with major studies in education. An emphasis in science is preferred.

Level or Type of Experience: Experience in teaching and/or museums including planning and implementing educational programs.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding know ledges and abilities may substitute for this training and experience.
