Distinguishing Features of the Work

Directs activities of the Science Presentations Division of the Science Museum of Virginia.

Incumbent assigns work and provides direction to the senior staff of the division. General direction and overall policy guidance is provided by the Science Museum Director.

The work involves responsibility for the administrative, technical, and operational requirements of the Science Presentations Division. The incumbent directs, develops, and coordinates the major functions of the division including: educational services, exhibit areas, planning and research, exhibit design and fabrication, volunteer program, and the gift shop operation. Responsibility is assigned for the development, evaluation, and presentation of museum programs offered to the public.

Frequent contact is made with the general public, educators, Science Museum members. and the Science Museum Foundation.

Timely, effective, and scientifically accurate program presentations are essential to the success of the Science Museum in providing service to the public.

 

Qualification Guide

Knowledge of one or more science disciplines. Knowledge of methods and procedures of presenting scientific theory and/or practice. Knowledge of science exhibit development and design. Ability to direct and supervise the work of others. Ability to conduct research. Ability to develop methods of presenting scientific theory and/or practice.

Graduation from a college or university with a major in one of the scientific disciplines, and experience in scientific exhibition and program development. An advanced degree in one of the science disciplines is desirable. An equivalent combination of training and experience, including supervisory experience, indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for the degree requirements.
