Distinguishing Features of the Work

Functions either as the head of a small specialized education unit, or as an assistant to a higher level Fine Arts Museum Educator.

May supervise Fine Arts Museum Educational Aides, interns, volunteers and other support workers. Reports to a higher level Fine Arts Museum Educator.

Positions allocated to this class perform one or more of the types of duties listed below.

Assists in coordinating and supervising museum education programs such as school group visits, Youth Gallery, art seminar program for tour guides, and the gallery hostess program. Schedules tours and visits which involve extensive correspondence and telephone contacts. Coordinates programs with other museum departments. Assists in the scheduling and training of a large volunteer group. Originates educational materials used by museum staff, volunteers, and the general public. Handles special projects as assigned.

Administers the Art mobile program consisting of three art mobile units and supporting personnel. Prepares and monitors budget. Arranges itineraries and schedules which involve contacts with sponsoring organizations throughout the state. Originates information/publicity packets. Assists with exhibition-related research. Is responsible for the security and maintenance of art mobiles and exhibition art work. Trains, supervises and evaluates work of Educational Aides. Handles special projects as assigned.

Assists a higher level educator in all aspects of developing and managing traveling exhibitions and media services. Assists in assessing success of lending program, and in long range planning. Recommends additions to the audio-visual collection, and follows through on acquisitions. Contacts distributors and initiates purchase orders. May research and write supplementary materials. Assists in developing and fabricating exhibitions. Prepares press releases and photographs. Participates in budget development, monitoring, and grants solicitation. Conducts lectures and workshops on audio-visual and films use. Supervises supporting staff.

Qualification Guide

Knowledge of art history and/or museum education. Knowledge of office administrative procedures. Ability to research, prepare and present lectures, training and educational materials. Ability to meet and work with the public and special interest groups.

Graduation from a college or university with major course work in art history or museum education; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
