Distinguishing Features of the Work

Performs various duties relating to the preparation, presentation and maintenance of traveling art exhibitions according to individual position assignment.

May supervise trainees or community volunteers. Reports to a higher level education specialist.

Prepares purchase orders for materials and supplies. Cuts mats, plexiglass, glass, acetate, mouldings and blackboard. Assembles art objects to be displayed. Determines type and size of hanging devices needed. Types exhibition labels, and prepares and mounts title and information panel copy. Prepares related documentation and handling instructions. Inspects exhibitions after presentations, and makes repairs.

Researches and studies exhibition themes and objects, and develops slide lectures including text. Makes arrangements for exhibitions by contacting local interest groups to set up schedules, and arrange for facilities and helpers. Works with conservators to maintain proper climate control and curatorial care of objects exhibited. Provides in-artmobile lectures and discussions to schools, clubs and the general public. Opens and closes art mobile for scheduled hours. Keeps attendance and other records, and evaluates reaction to exhibitions. Supervises local volunteers. Operates film projector and slide tape equipment.

Inspects and inventories films, slides, videotapes and projectors. Repairs damaged films and remounts slides. Researches and writes scripts for slide sets. Inventories, controls and makes minor repairs to audio-visual equipment. Supervises students and interns in the handling and maintenance of art objects, and audio-visual materials and equipment.

 

Qualification Guide

Knowledge of art history and/or museum education. Ability to prepare art objects for exhibition. Ability to research and present lectures and tours. Ability to operate and maintain audio-visual equipment. Ability to work with the public and special interest groups.

Graduation from a college or university with major course work in art history or museum education; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
