Distinguishing Features of the Work

Supervises the installation, operation, and maintenance of all equipment in an extensive closed circuit educational television system of a State university.

Responsibility is assigned for directing technical aspects of the layout, installation, maintenance, and operation of all types of broadcast quality television equipment in au extensive closed circuit educational television system at a major State university. Facilities usually include production studios, broadcast quality television cameras, lighting, audio and video studio controls, video tape recorders, and closed circuit broadcasting channels providing extended program coverage throughout the institution. Continuous appraisals are made of the technical performance of the system. Equipment alterations and modifications are planned and carried out to achieve improved performance. Extensive modifications are made to standard commercial television components in adapting their use to the closed circuit system. Supervision is exercised over subordinate technical personnel who assist with the normal maintenance and operation of facilities. Responsibilities are generally discharged under the guidance of an administrative superior.

Examples of duties characteristic of positions in this class:

1. Confers with administrative and instructional personnel on requirements of the campus educational television system; plans technical aspects of the layout and installation of television equipment in the system including production studios, control rooms, and closed circuit distribution channels.

2. Evaluates various brands and types of commercial television equipment develops specifications for the purchase of equipment; modifies television components for use in closed circuit systems.

3. Trains and supervises technical assistants in the normal operation, repair, and maintenance of the closed circuit television system.

4. Tests, monitors, and appraises the performance and effectiveness of all equipment in the closed circuit system on a continuous basis.

5. Plans and carries out modifications and additions to the television facility to achieve improved performance.

6. Provides technical direction over the see up and operation of all cameras, sets, consoles, video tape recorders, and related equipment during production and transmission of closed circuit programs.

Qualification Standards

Completion of a standard high school course and five years of experience involving the maintenance, installation, and repair of broadcast quality television production recording, and transmitting

equipment. Specialized technical school training or education related to the work may be substituted for the required experience and high school education on an equivalent time basis.

Thorough knowledge of installation, maintenance repair and operation of audio and video electronic equipment used in closed circuit television; considerable knowledge of the variety of equipment available for use in educational systems and of equipment layout; ability to plan, organ$ze and supervise a complex closed circuit education system, to evaluate technical requirements of educational programs and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with academic personnel, vendor representatives and subordinates.
