Distinguishing Features of the Work

Provides technical engineering services for a college or university closed circuit educational television system of moderate scope, or serves as first assistant to the principal engineer of a major university educational television system of extensive scope.

Positions in this class typically devote a major portion of time to maintaining, modifying, ant installing television production and transmission equipment in campus closed circuit systems. Responsibility may be assigned for the technical operation and maintenance of complete campus closed circuit educational television systems of moderate scope which generally offer intermittent program scheduling and which transmit coverage to a limited number of classrooms and other spaces. Duties require a technical knowledge of numerous types of broadcast quality television equipment; including cameras, video tape recorders, studio controls, lighting, and related components. Commercial television components are modified for local closed circuit use as outlined by technical or administrative superiors. Studio equipment! is operated and monitored during the production of live and video taped program to insure the maintenance of technical quality. Work is generally performed under the guidance of technical, administrative, or faculty superiors who devote major time to managing the institutions educational television services.

Examples of duties characteristic of positions in this class:

1. Assists in planning the layout of television equipment for campus closed circuit educational television systems.

2. Supervises the technical aspects of operating, installing and maintaining all equipment in a complete closed circuit educational television system of moderate scope. Facilities usually include a production studio, broadcast quality cameras, video tape equipment, and a closed circuit transmission system providing intermittent program coverage to a limited number of campus locations.

3. Assists a technical or administrative superior in projecting future equipment needs and in developing specifications for the procurement of television equipment.

4. Supervises and trains production personnel in the technical aspects of operating and controlling equipment during production and broadcasting sessions .

5. May direct subordinate technical personnel in maintaining repair and service facilities and in performing regular equipment maintenance on television system equipment.

Qualification Work Standards

Completion of a standard high school course and four years of experience in work involving maintenance, installation, and repair of broadcast quality television production recording, and transmission equipment. Specialized technical training; and education related to the work may be substituted for the required experience and high school education on an equivalent time basis.

Considerable knowledge of installation, maintenance repair and operation of audio and video electronic equipment used in closed circuit television, knowledge of the variety of equipment available for use in educational systems and of equipment layout; ability to analyze, interpret and evaluate schematic diagrams electronic specifications and equipment manuals, and to maintain effective working relationships with academic personnel, vendor representatives and associates.
