CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the first class in a series of classes responsible for the design, construction, installation and maintenance of a statewide radio communication system utilized by the State Police Department and other user agencies for law enforcement and public safety purposes, This class is distinguished from the Radio Engineer Specialist class by the latter's lack of responsibility for overall planning and design of the radio communication system.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Positions in this class perform work of moderate difficult; required in supervising the installation, maintenance and repair of radio communication equipment utilized by State Police and other user agencies Duties typically include providing technical assistance to field technicians; preparing orders for replacement parts and equipment; preparing schematic drawings for supervising the construction of special electronic equipment; performing repairs adjustments to equipment; supervising the work of other technical staff; reviewing maintenance and other reports; assisting the Radio Engineer Senior in preparing specifications for new equipment and assuming administrative responsibility of the Radio Engineer Senior in his absence.

Supervision Given: Typically supervises Electronic Technician Specialists and other power level technical staff.

Supervision Received: Receives general supervision from the Radio Engineers or Radio Station Design Specialists.

Scope. Work required of this class affects operational accuracy an functional ability of the statewide communication system.

Impact of Actions: Work that is not technically accurate and performed in a timely manner will result in deficiencies to a communications system that is critical to law enforcement activities across the state and to public safety.

Personal Contacts: Routinely communicates with user agencies to coordinate communication services; frequently contacts vendors to purchase equipment and parts: and talks to citizens in response to inquiries concerning the communications system.

KNOWLEDGE. Skills AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Working knowledge of electronics; and knowledge of communications system operation.

Skills: None identified for this class.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to supervise technical staff and communicate effectively orally and in writing.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: FCC General Class License.

Education or Training Completion of technical electronics or two-way radio program or equivalent military training

Level and Types of Experiences: Technical experience in the field and supervisor experience.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding know ledges and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.

 

CLASS History

This class was revised as the result of the Classification Review/Specification Update Program. This class replaced the State Police Radio Assistant Engineer in November, 1989 and was revised, effective March 1990.
