CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the first class in the State Police Radio Tower series. Positions in this class are responsible for the installation, maintenance, repair and inspection of towers in a statewide communications network which supports the law enforcement function and other public safety agencies. This class is distinguished from the State Police Radio Tower Specialist class by the latter's responsibility for final approval of all inspections and for supervisory responsibilities.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of moderate difficulty which includes inspecting, repairing and maintaining microwave and base antennas, transmission lines, radio tower lighting systems, and related equipment which are part of a statewide communications network in support of the public safety function. Inspections are approved by a State Police Radio Tower Specialist. Work also involves repairing communications equipment/structures under extremely adverse weather conditions during emergency situations in order that the State Police communications system not be jeopardized. Positions fabricate special hardware necessary for some installations; pour concrete and/or erect towers or prefabricated buildings; and perform general shop work for special purpose items.

Supervision Given: Supervision is typically not a factor.

Supervision Received: Receives general supervision from a State Police Radio Tower Specialist.

Scope: Work affects the operation of a statewide communications network which affects law enforcement in the Commonwealth.

Impact of Actions: Errors, inappropriate decisions, or non-response to emergencies will result in costs in money, time, and credibility to the agency and affect the safety of citizens of the Commonwealth. Effective job performance facilitates the successful operation of a statewide communications network.

Personal Contacts: Frequent internal and external contacts with other state agencies receiving maintenance/installation support for their communications networks; and with federal agencies, contractors, suppliers, and law enforcement officials regarding the installation and maintenance of communication equipment.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Working knowledge of antenna system operation and installation and related equipment; and of electricity and electrical testing equipment.

Skills: Working skill in the use of carpentry and hand tools/equipment such as power tools, electric welders, acetylene torches, and metal lathes.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to install and repair radio tower antennas and equipment;.and to climb towers in order to perform duties.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: Valid Virginia driver's license.

Education or Training: High school graduation or equivalent.

Level and Types of Experience: Some experience in welding and/or other mechanical areas.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledges and abilities may substitute for the education and experience.

 

CLASS HISTORY
