CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is a single class series which is responsible for managing the design, system layout, maintenance and repair of technical facilities of radio stations, television systems and broadcasting studios located on university campuses.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF the WORK

Complexity of Work: The work performed by positions in this class is of moderate difficulty and duties typically include designing and laying out technical facilities such as production rooms, on-air studios, transmitter and translator plants, satellite earth stations, and relay stations; providing technical support and assistance in the production and broadcast of programs; repairing and supervising the repair and maintenance of equipment used in the facility; recommending the purchase of equipment and components to improve or expand broadcasting and programming capabilities; training technical personnel; monitoring FCC rules and regulations and maintaining records required by FCC regulations.

Supervision Given: May supervise technical staff consisting of work-study students and lower level technical staff.

Supervision Received: Receives general direction from a higher level administrative manager or faculty member.

Scope: Work performed by positions in this class directly affects the delivery of programming and broadcasting services to listeners and users.

Impact of Actions: Design, construction and maintenance of technical facilities and equipment that is not accurate and technically may result in lost air time and costs associated with lost air time.

Personal Contacts: Frequent contact is maintained with performers for the purpose of making arrangements of recordings/broadcasts and with vendors to discuss the purchase of equipment and supplies. Occasional contact is initiated with listeners to resolve program reception problems Outside contractors are contacted periodically to arrange outside repair work.

 

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledqe: Working knowledge of radio engineering and maintenance; and of the operation and repair of radio/television equipment. Knowledge of FCC rules and regulations.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; and to operate audio test equipment.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: FCC First Class License or ability to obtain one.

Education or Training: Completion of a formal training program in electronics or a related field.

Level and Types of Experience: Experience in radio electronics and/or maintenance or military communications electronics.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledges and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
