Distinguishing Features of the Work

Inspects, maintains, repairs, and installs a variety of radio-telephone communication equipment used in a State-wide network;, or repairs and maintains radio-broadcasting and closed-circuit-television equipment.

The duties involve responsibility for the maintenance, repair, and installation of radio-telephone equipment operating on a low-frequency wave and including receivers, transmitters, amplifiers' tuner devices, and antenna. An assignment may involve the maintenance and repair of low-frequency radio-broadcasting equipment, and closed-circuit television equipment including pulse generators, monitors, cameras, video tape recorders, and amplifiers. Operating problems are diagnosed and determinations are made or. the technical repairs necessary. Responsibility also exists for the performance of preventive maintenance work on all broadcasting and television equipment, and the work is performed either in a repair shop, or in the area of operation of equipment. The necessity to maintain the equipment in operating condition due to the communication network functioning on a continuous basis or during a major portion of a 24-hour period requires an "on call" status at all times. The work may require instructing others in minor maintenance work to retain equipment in operating condition. Routine repairs of television equipment or mobile radio units - and small base stations are made without technical supervision, and in some instances technical surer vision may not be available immediately' thus requiring improvisation to maintain? the equipment in, an operating condition. The work is evaluated by the performance of the equipment and the frequency with which costly equipment requires replacement Inspection of the completed work is generally performed by a higher level technician, although technical supervision may not be available within the agency.

Examples of duties characteristic of positions in this class:

1. Inspects, repairs, and maintains such radio communication and broadcasting equipment as receivers, transmitters, power units aerial masts, radar sets, and testing equipment; diagnoses causes of faulty operation and determines need for replacement of parts or whether repairs can be effected; performs preventive maintenance as well as repairs on a variety of television equipment, such as cameras pulse generators, video tape recorders, amplifiers, monitors, and control panels.

2. Makes frequency checks of all fixed and mobile transmitters as required by the Federal Communications Commission to assure broadcast on assigned frequency to .01~; checks and tunes television monitors and video-tape receiving apparatus.

3. Installs radio transmitters and receivers in permanent locations by assembling equipment received from factory, installing and wiring, setting for proper frequency, and tuning the set; installs amplifiers and/or speakers in designated locations.

4. In radio shop, repairs and services equip men+ brought in from fixed or mobile stations.

5. Makes periodic check of all mobile and fixed radio equipment in an assigned geographical area for operating efficiency and making any repairs necessary.

6. Goes immediately to any car or station reporting radio trouble and makes necessary repairs.

7. Maintains records and makes reports on all service and repair activities; recommends purchase of electronic components and/or equipment to improve or expand broadcasting and television programming.

 

Qualification Standards

Completion of high school and three years of experience in radio or television repair work. Possession of a second-class Federal Communications Commission radio-telephone license. Trade or technical school training in radio repair or engineering may be substituted for experience on an equivalent time basis.

Thorough working knowledge of the tools, materials, equipment, and methods employed in the construction, assembly, installation, operation, testing, servicing, and repair of radio and radio-telephone equipment.
